Medical Nutrition Therapy with Brandy Minks

After months of waiting for insurance credentialing to complete, we are FINALLY welcoming a talented dietitian to the Namaste team. I first met Brandy Minks when we worked closely together at a skilled nursing facility for several years. We became fast friends as we helped each other with our complex patients, treating people with a wide range of illness: on tube feeding, in cancer treatment, battling chronic autoimmune disorders, recovering from cardiothoracic surgeries, fighting serious infections, managing intensive diabetes and dialysis, navigating malnutrition, and much more.

Minks is my respectable colleague, and she is also a dear friend; our preschool children are just four months apart. She and I share a similar love and passion for nutrition and helping people make peace with their bodies. Brandy’s character sets her grades above; she is kind, endearing, humble, and yet wildly intelligent. She is working on her first book on mindful eating, sharing Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size principles.

She is an accomplished dietitian and is passionate about helping people live full and healthy lives without dieting. She is also the eldest sister of our wonderful administrative assistant at Namaste Nutritionist, Cassi. We are happy to welcome Brandy Minks to our team!

I conducted an interview with Brandy so that you could have an opportunity to get to know her better. Here is more about her:

Professional philosophy: What is your approach to working with clients?

I believe that a person can be healthy at any size. This is why I take a weight-inclusive approach with my clients. Using BMI or weight in determining a person’s health is extremely outdated and simply not useful. Instead I focus on treating a medical condition with Medical Nutrition Therapy.

In Western society, diet culture has created a disconnect between us, our bodies, and food. I help my clients repair those connections and reject the diet mentality through Intuitive Eating. By building a foundation of mindfulness and self-awareness, my clients are able to heal from disordered eating and shift into an eating style that supports true health.

Which clients do you see for Medical Nutrition Therapy?

I am a jack of all trades in the nutrition therapy world, but I have extensive experience in the following:

  • Disordered Eating such as emotional/stress eating or eating in secret
  • Diabetes Management
  • Chronic Kidney Disease and End-Stage Kidney Disease Management
  • Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Therapy Management
  • Geriatric Nutrition
  • Malnutrition and at-risk for malnutrition
  • Cancer Nutrition

What do you love about nutrition?

Food has always been a passion of mine! I greatly enjoy hearing about other people’s experiences with food and what it means to them. The world of nutrition is so vast and I am always able to satisfy my desire to learn! I love that I can practice nutrition in so many different ways and interact with people at all different stages in their lives.

What makes you thrive?

I thrive best when I am doing things I love – being out in nature, adventuring with my family, watching comedy shows, journaling, reading, connecting with friends, baking treats, practicing yoga or meditation, and best of all, serving others.
