Take charge of your money and change the world

Ah, money. We want more, but we are not always sure what to do with it. Do we save it, spend it, invest it, or just avoid the whole thing and hope it all works out?

I work with people every day who feel less than confident about money. Some even feel anxious, overwhelmed, and insecure – after all, we’re not taught about money, we can’t talk about it, and we want to have it all together.

But sometimes we don’t.

I only have this little space to share with you today, and I want to make it count! So here you go – my top 3 quick and dirty personal money tips:

  • Align your spending with your values. Is family important to you, but you pay hundreds every month for cable – then watch TV instead of spending time together? Is security important, but you have no savings? Or health, but you spend on junk food? Stop paying for things that sabotage you, and put that money toward things that really matter.
  • Put your money tracking on autopilot (or close, anyway!) Once you know where it goes you have control over what happens. I like www.mint.com. It’s quick, easy, and learns as you go – the more you use it, the “smarter” it gets!
  • Set boundaries. Things that make you feel bad steal your money, too. Energy sucks, I call them. Are you in a bad relationship? Have friends that drain you? Do you waste time on things like Facebook or gaming? Anything that lowers your energy level makes you less able – or willing – to take care of business, go the extra mile, and make cool new things happen. Protect yourself from the sucks, and add in things that energize you instead. Your bank account will thank you!

Real change won’t come from governments, big corporations, or the top 1% – it will come from the rest of us. The more we know, the more calm and confident we feel. The more of us that feel calm and confident, the bigger the difference we will make, through giving, volunteering, and just plain being happy.
